Thanks to film director Zack Snyder, who adapted the story into the movie Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, her stories now celebrate success around the world. The series is published by Scholastic.Īlthough the stories are of a fantasy world where owls speak, think, and dream, the author tried as much as possible to incorporate details of how owls actually live. The series contains 15 volumes and follows the adventures of young barn owls as they grow up among war, enchantment, and shifting allegiances. She had planned to write factual books accompanied by photographs, but what eventually emerged were a number of fantastic stories about the owl world titled The Guardians of Ga’Hoole. News of the invention soon reaches the over-sized ears of the Big Bad Wolf, who decides to pay a Halloween visit to Dr. Smart Pig, who gasps, “I’ve & I’ve created a MONSTER.” The humongous pig’s insatiable appetite for any and everything overwhelms Dr. Two initial attempts go awry with ridiculous results, then on the very eve of Halloween, his experiment produces a porker the size of a semi-truck. Halloween is coming but he has no one to share the fun with, so he decides to invent a friend, “a pig that is bigger and better ? absolutely wolf-proof.” Smart Pig is sole survivor of an attack by the Big Bad Wolf, who ate his two brothers. Every year it is the hands-down favorite story of the season in my elementary school library. “Porkenstein” is a gleeful mash-up of The Three Little Pigs and Frankenstein, perfect Halloween reading for any age.
